Hi all,

I did two ER visits with Mom in the last couple of days—one at 2:00 in the afternoon and the next at 2:00 in the morning. (She had nosebleeds that wouldn't stop.) Though it was frightening for her, she's okay now—back in her assisted living apartment, recovering and getting good care.

I'm writing this to you while attempting to be coherent.

A day retreat is sounding pretty good right now.

The cabana where I live sits right on a small lake, and it's one of my favorite places in the summer. It's peaceful, with the outdoors full of birds, and with comfortable seating inside and plenty of room to move around—which is exactly what we'll be doing as my friend Karen Patricia Neal (interview here) leads us through a day of improv and writing.

We'll start by getting acquainted before Karen guides us through lively exercises that reveal the hidden life beneath every conversation.

Then we'll write.

Then we'll be hungry, so we'll head out for lunch (I'm leaning toward either my favorite Thai restaurant or my favorite Indian restaurant).

Then we'll come back and dive even deeper.

We'll finish the day by sharing what we've discovered.

A whole day to spend in actual space and time with other writers, in a beautiful setting, approaching our stories through acting.

That sounds like bliss to me.

(And though I love teaching, it also sounds like bliss to spend the day learning alongside you while Karen leads.)
